A leading healthcare data and technology biotech aiming to learn from the experience of every cancer patient is looking for a Medical Director who is passionate about the potential for real-world evidence (RWE) to foster the fight against cancer. The data generation approach involves processing source data from clinical information systems into high-quality datasets, enabling cancer care providers and researchers to gain access to high quality data to accelerate drug discovery, cancer treatments and improve oncology outcomes.
The role
The Medical Director will work closely with the UK Clinical Lead as a key member of the UK Medical & Scientific organisation and collaborate with teams in Germany, Japan and the USA.
Tasks & Responsibilities
· Provide clinical expertise for decisions related to data processing, database creation, and research and clinical product development.
· Help to build our tumour-specific data models using Electronic Health Record data and based on UK oncology clinical practice.
· Inform key data processing decisions: assess what types of data elements are routinely captured in structured vs. unstructured data to inform how to process health records into data products
· Support the building of data processing policies and procedures: develop rules for abstractors (clinical professionals who extract complex unstructured clinical data from electronic medical records)
· Support the engagement of NHS Trust clinicians and employees to understand how RWE can help support clinical and research needs.
· Work closely with data scientists to provide clinical and methodological support to external users of the oncology real-world databases.
· Conduct RWE research with internal & external partners. Be involved with Research Oversight processes. Publish manuscripts and present research output at national and international conferences.
· Collaborate with a cross-functional team including technical (e.g., software engineers), data scientists, business development, data privacy experts, and other clinical professionals
· Work with US clinical scientific leadership to ensure knowledge generated / learned by the US clinical team becomes embedded within the UK business (e.g., approaches to clinical variable development and research methods)
What we look for
The Medical Director is a data-driven physician with at least 3-5 years working in oncology. They are excited by the prospect of working on difficult and meaningful problems each and every day. They are a kind, passionate and collaborative problem-solver who seeks and gives candid feedback, and values the chance to make an important impact on cancer patients and society.
· They have direct and recent clinical experience with an oncology specialty, such as medical oncology, clinical oncology, surgical oncology, etc.
· They completed the relevant post-graduate exams (or equivalent) (e.g. Certificate in Medical Oncology, FRCR, FRCS, etc.).
· They understand of NHS cancer diagnostic and treatment pathways
· They are curious and stay up to date on the latest advance in oncology drug development through reading and conference attendance
· They have worked in a research environment either as a principal investigator or member of a research team in academic or industry context. They have published and presented oncology research
· They have interest and experience with creating databases for research
· They have experience with health records, and oncology electronic clinical systems
· They have experience with how clinical data is represented across UK (e.g., understanding of ICD codes, cancer registry data)
· They are excited about working in a passionate, fast-paced, technology-driven culture
· They can collaborate and easily explain scientific terms to a non-medical, highly sophisticated audience; strong communication skills
· They are comfortable with ambiguity and a willingness to teach and learn
· They speak fluent English
