About Role:
We are seeking a strategic and experienced Head of Procurement - Direct Materials to lead our procurement function for critical raw materials in support of our biotechnology manufacturing and R&D operations. This role will own the sourcing strategy for direct materials including active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), biologics, reagents, excipients, and single-use systems, ensuring uninterrupted supply, cost efficiency, and supplier quality in a GxP-regulated environment.
This is a high-impact leadership position that will shape supplier partnerships, scale procurement capabilities, and align closely with Manufacturing, Quality, R&D, and Regulatory teams to support our growth trajectory.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop and execute the global procurement strategy for direct materials, aligned with company growth plans and supply chain requirements.
- Lead sourcing initiatives for key raw materials and critical components, focusing on cost optimisation, risk mitigation, and long-term supplier relationships.
- Manage and mentor a team of category managers, buyers, and analysts to ensure high performance and continuous improvement.
- Partner cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, R&D, Regulatory, and Finance to support new product introductions and commercial scale-up.
- Drive supplier selection, qualification, and performance management in alignment with GMP and regulatory standards.
- Negotiate and manage supply agreements, master service agreements, and quality agreements with domestic and international suppliers.
- Develop and monitor KPIs, spend analytics, and category dashboards to ensure transparency, compliance, and procurement efficiency.
- Lead risk assessment and mitigation planning across the supplier base, with emphasis on supply continuity and compliance.
- Implement digital tools and systems to support strategic sourcing and procurement operations (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Coupa, etc.)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Life Sciences, or related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in procurement/sourcing, with at least 5 years in direct materials sourcing in biotech, pharma, or life sciences.
- Strong knowledge of GMP requirements and experience working with regulated suppliers and contract manufacturers.
- Demonstrated success in negotiating high-value contracts and building long-term supplier relationships.
- Proven experience in leading cross-functional teams and delivering procurement value beyond cost savings (e.g., risk, quality, speed to market).
- Proficiency in ERP and procurement tools such as SAP, Oracle, Coupa, or Ariba.
- Exceptional analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
