Haematococcus Production Supervisor

We are seeking an experienced Haematococcus Production Supervisor to play a key role in establishing and leading production operations focused on the cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis and the manufacture of natural astaxanthin products.

This is a rare opportunity to join a growing organisation at a critical stage, helping transition operations from scale-up to commercial manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise day-to-day cultivation and production activities for Haematococcus pluvialis.
  • Lead production teams in achieving operational, quality, and safety targets.
  • Support commissioning, start-up, and scale-up activities for a new production facility.
  • Monitor culture performance, productivity, and process efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with GMP, food, nutraceutical, or biotechnology manufacturing standards.
  • Work closely with process development, engineering, and quality teams.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives across production operations.

Requirements

  • Proven commercial experience cultivating Haematococcus pluvialis.
  • Strong understanding of astaxanthin production processes.
  • Experience within microalgae, algal biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, fermentation, or bioprocess manufacturing environments.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience within production operations.
  • Knowledge of scale-up, process optimisation, and commercial manufacturing.
  • Excellent problem-solving and team leadership skills.
  • Ability to work on-site in Lisbon, Portugal.

Desirable

  • Experience with photobioreactors and/or open pond cultivation systems.
  • Background in nutraceutical, food ingredient, biotechnology, or aquaculture production.
  • Experience supporting start-up or greenfield manufacturing facilities.
