Freelance Materials Engineer / Scientist (Medical Devices)

Location: Remote (with up to 20% travel to vendor sites in Germany required)
Contract: 12-month freelance contract, potential for extension

About the Role:
We are seeking hands-on Materials Engineers or Scientists with strong expertise and applied, practical knowledge of soft metal alloys and/or medical coatings. This role offers the opportunity to shape the material and coating strategy for a life-changing technology.


Key Responsibilities

  • Work with vendors to optimise alloy compositions and treatments for performance and safety.
  • Develop and characterise coating formulations for durability and bio compatibility.
  • Drive process development and deposition techniques.
  • Collaborate with the broader technical team to align materials performance with implant requirements.
  • Support vendor selection, prototype builds, and testing.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience in medical device materials development, with strong preference for candidates who have evaluated materials through in vivo animal and human trials.
  • Demonstrated hands-on expertise in soft metal alloy optimisation and/or thin film or coating deposition.
  • Experience translating materials to optimal structural design of a medical device; CAD drafting is a strong plus.
  • Understanding of cardiovascular physiology and anatomy; experience observing or supporting cases is a strong plus.
  • Passion for innovation and willingness to operate in a dynamic, early-stage environment.
