Fermentation Senior Scientist
Position Summary
Scientists/Sr. Scientists are highly motivated individuals who serve as supervisor/project leads for one or more projects and mentor junior scientists or associates. Through significant contributions to the operation and strategic growth of the organization, Scientists/Sr. Scientists are core team members who strongly influence performance and development.
Responsibilities
- As a Fermentation Scientist, provide technical expertise and leadership in planning, designing, and conducting microbial fermentation experiments, analyzing data, and documenting results to support development and optimization of upstream processes and/or cross‑functional project goals.
- Provide technical expertise and leadership in innovation initiatives for relevant project teams.
- Supervise setup, operation, and routine maintenance of fermenters; monitor processes to ensure consistency and reliability.
- Work independently to analyze and interpret data; present/document results in meetings. Prepare reports, scientific presentations, batch records, and technical documentation.
- Collaborate with colleagues across global sites on one or multiple projects.
- Maintain and promote group awareness of relevant scientific literature and emerging technologies; participate in/lead evaluations of new technologies and assess potential applications and business impacts.
- Provide technical coaching and matrix management to junior team members through mentoring, training, and process development supervision.
- Participate in management activities including resource planning and project management.
- Troubleshoot equipment and process issues as needed.
- Ensure and promote safe laboratory and environmental practices.
Qualifications
- Ph.D., M.S., or B.S. in biology, biochemistry, biomedical/biochemical engineering, or related fields.
- Experience requirements:
- Ph.D. with ≥1 year (≥5 years for Sr. Scientist)
- Master's with ≥3 years (≥8 years for Sr. Scientist)
- Bachelor's with ≥6 years (≥10 years for Sr. Scientist)
All experience must be in upstream bioprocess development, scale‑up, and tech transfer to cGMP manufacturing within biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or related industries.
- Excellent knowledge and experience in microbial fermentation process development, scale‑up/scale‑down, and tech transfer. Experience with design‑of‑experiments and strong data analysis skills.
- Good knowledge of cGMP environments.
- Strong technical, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with multiple competing priorities.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills with effective communication abilities.
- Proactive attitude toward learning new technologies and adapting to process development changes.
- Client‑focused and results‑oriented, with strong scientific and innovation‑driven mindset and good financial awareness.
- Advanced scientific writing skills.
- Attention to detail and strong multitasking abilities.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and DOE software (JMP, Minitab, Design Expert, etc.).
- Flexible and results‑oriented.
