About the Role
A growing consumer goods organization is seeking a seasoned R&D leader to guide innovation across its personal care portfolio. This role oversees the development of new formulations, advancement of scientific capabilities, and execution of research programs that support a wide range of naturally inspired beauty and personal care products. The Technical Director will shape long‑term scientific direction, strengthen product performance standards, and lead a high‑functioning technical team from early concept through commercialization.
This position reports directly to a senior executive within the Personal Care & Beauty function and plays a strategic part in expanding the organization's science‑driven approach to product innovation.
Responsibilities
- Lead full‑cycle R&D activities for new and existing personal care products, from concept creation through formulation, testing, and launch execution.
- Set scientific direction for the category, ensuring all product development aligns with performance expectations, safety standards, and consumer trends.
- Oversee clinical evaluations, analytical testing, and claims substantiation to support global regulatory compliance and product credibility.
- Guide ingredient strategy by identifying new technologies, sustainable materials, and innovative formulation approaches.
- Manage and mentor a multidisciplinary scientific team, fostering a collaborative, high‑performance culture.
- Strengthen technical capabilities by implementing best practices in formulation, testing methodologies, and documentation.
- Partner closely with cross‑functional groups-including Regulatory, Quality, Marketing, and Operations-to move products smoothly from lab to market.
- Represent the organization's scientific work in external collaborations, supplier discussions, and industry forums.
- Anticipate technical risks and troubleshoot formulation, manufacturing, or stability challenges to ensure on‑time delivery.
- Build and execute R&D plans that achieve business objectives around cost, performance, timing, and product claims.
Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Toxicology, or a related scientific discipline.
- At least 10 years of R&D leadership experience within Personal Care, Beauty, Wellness, or OTC product categories.
- Demonstrated success driving innovation pipelines and developing consumer‑facing formulations.
- Strong understanding of formulation science, ingredient functionality, safety assessments, and claims support frameworks.
- Experience directing clinical testing, analytical evaluations, and regulatory documentation.
- Proven ability to build, lead, and motivate high‑performing technical teams.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements, sustainability principles, and intellectual property considerations for consumer products.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for various internal and external audiences.
- Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment that requires cross‑functional collaboration and scientific agility.
- Willingness to relocate to Idaho Falls, Idaho, and work onsite five days per week.
