Senior R&D Engineer - Hydrophilic Coatings & Catheter Technologies

Location: Galway, Ireland
Contract: 12 Month Initial Contract
Start Date: ASAP

Working Pattern: Full-Time

The Opportunity

We are supporting a leading medical device organisation in Galway in the search for a Senior R&D Engineer to join a high-performing product development team focused on advanced surface technologies and hydrophilic coating development.

The ideal candidate will combine a strong scientific foundation in chemistry, polymer science or materials science with hands-on experience working on catheter technologies and medical device coatings.

Key Responsibilities

Lead hydrophilic coating development activities for catheter-based medical devices.
Design and execute experimental studies to optimise coating formulations and application processes.
Characterise coating performance, lubricity, adhesion and durability.
Investigate coating-related performance issues and implement technical solutions.
Support design verification, testing and validation activities.
Collaborate closely with R&D, Materials, Quality, Regulatory and Manufacturing teams.
Analyse and interpret experimental data to drive development decisions.
Generate technical documentation to support product development and regulatory requirements.
Support technology transfer and manufacturing scale-up activities where required.

Essential Requirements

Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in:
- Chemistry
- Polymer Chemistry
- Materials Science
- Chemical Engineering
- Biomedical Engineering
- Or a related scientific discipline
Previous experience developing or supporting catheter-based medical devices.
Experience working with hydrophilic coatings, surface modification technologies or polymer coating systems.
Strong laboratory and experimental design skills.
Experience within a regulated medical device environment.
Excellent technical problem-solving and data analysis capabilities.

Highly Desirable Experience

Development of coated catheters, guidewires or interventional devices.
Hydrophilic coating formulation development.
Polymer chemistry and surface chemistry.
Biomaterials and advanced materials characterisation.
Surface treatment technologies.
Coating process optimisation and scale-up.
Failure analysis and root cause investigations.
Design verification and validation activities.
