Publications Manager / Scientific Lead, Medical Communications
Publications Manager / Scientific Lead, Medical Communications
Location: Boston, MA or New York, NY
Work Arrangement: Hybrid
EPM Scientific is partnering with an independent global healthcare communications consultancy specializing in medical communications, market access, and HEOR. Due to continued demand from new and existing biopharmaceutical clients, the organization is hiring a Publications Manager to join its US Medical Communications team!
This is a scientific leadership and client-management position, not a traditional editorial, journal-production, or purely hands-on writing role. This is a highly visible opportunity to take a leading role across publications projects, provide strategic direction to clients, manage project teams, and contribute to the agency's continued growth in the US market. This role also gives you the opportunity to help shape a growing US operation while being supported by established global teams across the UK and Asia.
The ideal candidate will own publications and Medical Affairs programs, provide scientific and strategic direction, serve as a primary client contact, and guide project teams from initial planning through final delivery. They will remain close enough to the science to review and strengthen content while taking broader ownership of client relationships, timelines, budgets, and account delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the scientific lead and primary day-to-day client contact across publications and Medical Affairs projects
- Own publication plans and strategic scientific communications programs from planning through execution, serving as a primary client contact throughout the project lifecycle
- Develop and oversee manuscripts, abstracts, posters, congress presentations, scientific platforms, and publication-planning materials
- Lead or oversee Medical Affairs deliverables such as plain-language summaries, advisory boards, symposia, MSL decks, field materials, training materials, and scientific slide decks
- Translate complex clinical data into scientifically accurate, audience-appropriate communications and provide strategic guidance on evidence dissemination, publication planning, scientific narratives, and medical communication needs
- Lead client meetings, manage expectations, and identify opportunities to add value across ongoing and future projects
- Leverage peer review expertise to support manuscript development, reviewer responses, and publication success
- Ensure publication activities align with industry standards and guidelines, including GPP, ICMJE, authorship requirements, disclosure standards, and publication ethics best practices
- Manage project timelines, budgets, resources, and risks to ensure successful project delivery
- Collaborate with Medical Affairs, Publications, Legal, Regulatory, Compliance, and other cross-functional stakeholders
- Support business development efforts through proposals, pitch materials, competitive intelligence, landscape analyses, and client presentations
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to a collaborative, high-performing team environment
Key Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in a scientific, medical, pharmacy, or closely related discipline
- 3+ years of medical communications or publications experience in an agency, pharmaceutical company, CRO, or similar environment
- Experience leading publication plans, publications accounts, or high-profile scientific communications programs from strategy through delivery
- Strong client-facing experience with demonstrated ability to manage relationships and provide strategic counsel
- Extensive experience supporting peer review, manuscript revisions, and publication development activities
- Strong knowledge of publication compliance standards and industry guidelines, including GPP, ICMJE, authorship requirements, publication ethics, and disclosure practices
- Exposure to business development activities, including proposal development, pitch deck creation, competitive intelligence, and account growth initiatives
- Hybrid availability for the Boston or New York office 2-3 days per week
