Chemical Process Engineer

About the Opportunity

Our client is a specialized engineering and development organization supporting complex chemical manufacturing and process innovation programs across a variety of highly regulated industries. They are seeking a Process Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team focused on process development, scale-up, optimization, and technology transfer.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer or recent graduate with advanced education who enjoys hands-on laboratory work, process problem-solving, and working on technically challenging projects from development through manufacturing support.

Position Overview

The Process Engineer will contribute to process development, scale-up, and technical execution activities supporting a diverse portfolio of chemical and pharmaceutical development programs. This individual will work in a laboratory environment utilizing advanced reaction systems, process analytical technologies, and data-driven process development methodologies.

The role offers significant exposure to experimental design, process optimization, reaction engineering, crystallization development, process safety, and technical reporting while collaborating closely with engineering, chemistry, quality, and manufacturing teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and analyze laboratory experiments to support process development and scale-up activities.
  • Operate and maintain advanced reactor platforms and process analytical technology (PAT) tools.
  • Generate and interpret process data, including reaction kinetics, mass balances, energy balances, and crystallization studies.
  • Identify process improvements and troubleshoot technical challenges through data-driven analysis.
  • Prepare technical reports and communicate project findings to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support project execution with an understanding of timelines, budgets, and customer expectations.
  • Work cross-functionally with scientists, engineers, quality personnel, and manufacturing teams.
  • Maintain compliance with laboratory safety, quality, and operational procedures.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and technical best practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering with 2+ years of industry experience, or an MS/PhD in Chemical Engineering. Salary is commensurate to experience.
  • Strong foundation in chemical reaction engineering, process development, or scale-up.
  • Experience working in laboratory or pilot-scale environments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting pharmaceutical, specialty chemical, CRO, CDMO, or related process development environments.
  • Familiarity with automated reactor systems and reaction calorimetry tools.
  • Experience utilizing process analytical technologies such as spectroscopy, particle monitoring, or in-situ analytical instrumentation.
  • Exposure to process modeling or simulation software such as Aspen Plus, Dynochem, COMSOL, MATLAB, or similar tools.
  • Experience with crystallization development, reaction optimization, or scale-up studies.

Additional Information

  • Hands-on laboratory role with exposure to hazardous chemical processes.
  • Candidates must be comfortable working within a rigorous safety and quality-driven environment.
  • Participation in specialized safety and compliance training will be required.
  • Employment contingent upon standard background screening, drug screening, and applicable work authorization requirements.

Ideal Candidate

We're looking for someone who is intellectually curious, technically strong, and excited by hands-on experimental work. Successful candidates are proactive problem solvers who enjoy turning complex process challenges into scalable manufacturing solutions while working as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.
