Principal Scientist, Antibody Engineering

Company Overview

An innovative biotechnology company leveraging synthetic biology to pioneer a novel class of biologic therapeutics. Their focus is on developing transformative treatments for cancer and other serious conditions, with the goal of delivering meaningful outcomes for patients.

Position Summary

The company is looking for a seasoned scientist with a strong background in protein engineering to lead efforts in optimizing early-stage molecules into viable therapeutic candidates. This role requires a blend of technical expertise in structural biology, molecular biology, and protein sciences, along with leadership capabilities to guide a team and collaborate across disciplines. The ideal candidate will play a central role in designing and executing protein engineering strategies and will serve as a scientific advisor across multiple programs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage and mentor a team of scientists focused on protein engineering, offering both scientific direction and career development
  • Partner with cross-functional teams in discovery, development, and project management to transition molecules from discovery hits to clinical candidates
  • Lead the design and generation of combinatorial libraries and oversee engineering campaigns for antibodies and proteins
  • Enhance lab operations through continuous workflow improvements
  • Guide the integration and interpretation of experimental and computational data to support predictive modeling efforts
  • Provide strategic input on therapeutic design, including structural hypotheses, reagent development, and molecular formatting
  • Support leadership in shaping technology development initiatives and long-term scientific strategy

Required Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience
  • Strong command of protein structure, molecular interactions, and biophysical characteristics
  • Expertise in a variety of antibody formats, such as monoclonal antibodies, bispecifics, scFvs, and single-domain antibodies
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering therapeutic proteins, including humanization, liability mitigation, and optimization
  • Proficiency in evaluating and improving developability attributes like solubility, stability, and manufacturability
  • Familiarity with computational tools, databases, and machine learning applications in protein design
  • Proven track record of managing and developing scientific talent

Preferred Experience

  • Hands-on experience with high-throughput assay development and plate-based screening
  • Background in engineering small proteins or enzymes
  • Ability to synthesize and apply structural and biophysical data (e.g., epitope mapping, binding kinetics) to guide design decisions
