Algal Specialist

Key Responsibilities
* Provide support to the Senior Algal Specialist and act as her/his appointed backup in her/his
absence
* Monitor culture health, perform routine analyses, and troubleshoot contamination or growth
issues.
* Develop and optimise protocols for algae growth, nutrient management, and environmental
control.
* Conduct laboratory and pilot-scale experiments related to algae cultivation, harvesting, and
processing to optimise the production outcome of biomass and astaxanthin
bioaccumulation.
* Work collaboratively or serve as project manager for development and investment initiatives
in cultivation and production. Contribute to continuous improvements.
* Cooperate and contribute to a safe and positive work environment.
* Perform biochemical, molecular, or physiological analyses depending on project
requirements.
* Document and interpret experimental results and present findings to internal stakeholders.
* Collaborate with R&D, production, and quality departments to improve the upstream and
downstream cultivation process.

* Update and create new routine instructions relevant for the cultivation process.
* Detect, write and follow-up non-conformities relevant for quality parameters in production.
* Contribute to documentation, and standard operating procedures, ensuring alignment with
ISO 9001 and FSSC 22000 certification requirements.
* Stay updated on scientific advancements, emerging technologies, and industry trends
related to algae.
* In addition to the tasks specified above, you are expected to assist your manager as needed,
which may involve a variety of tasks depending on your personal profile.
* Occasional internal travel between AstaReal's facilities (e.g., Nacka HQ and the Quality lab
in Uppsala), depending on assignment needs.
* The role includes international travel to support cross-functional collaboration, attend key
meetings, and represent the organisation at global events.

Qualifications
Education:
* PhD in Marine Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, or related field.
Experience:
* Experience with algae cultivation (microalgae and/or macroalgae) in laboratory or industrial
settings.
* Knowledge of bioprocessing, photobioreactors, aquaculture systems or fermentation.
* Experience with analytical techniques such as microscopy, spectrophotometry, or
molecular biology methods.

Skills:
* Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
* Ability to design and execute scientific experiments independently.
* Good understanding of algal physiology and environmental parameters affecting growth.
* Proficiency in data analysis and scientific reporting.
* Strong teamwork and communication skills.
* Language requirements: Fluent in English. Swedish is not mandatory, but a merit.
