MRI Scientist

A leading global pharmaceutical organisation is seeking an MRI Scientist to join a highly specialised analytical R&D team focused on advanced material characterisation and pharmaceutical product development.

This laboratory-based position offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge MRI and NMR technologies to support the development of innovative drug products, formulations, and drug delivery systems. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team of experts working across analytical development, material sciences, and pharmaceutical product development to solve complex scientific challenges using advanced imaging techniques.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimise and validate MRI methods for pharmaceutical materials, formulations, and dosage forms.
  • Apply MRI techniques to investigate:
    • Water ingress and hydration kinetics
    • Tablet and capsule disintegration behaviour
    • Swelling, diffusion and dissolution mechanisms
    • Coating performance and delayed-release characteristics
    • Drug delivery device functionality
    • Suspension sedimentation and resuspendability
  • Generate meaningful scientific insights from imaging data and communicate findings to project teams.
  • Support formulation development, analytical development and material characterisation activities.
  • Develop MRI workflows and analytical methodologies that complement existing pharmaceutical analytical techniques.
  • Establish best practices, SOPs and data interpretation approaches for MRI-based characterisation.
  • Collaborate with scientists across multiple R&D functions in a highly cross-functional environment.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of complex pharmaceutical formulations and product performance.
  • Potentially support solid-state NMR experiments and data interpretation.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in:
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Materials Science
    • Pharmaceutical Sciences
    • Related scientific discipline
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in MRI, NMR, analytical development, imaging sciences, or advanced characterisation.
  • Hands-on experience operating pre-clinical MRI instrumentation.
  • Experience developing, validating or optimising MRI methods.
  • Strong understanding of imaging data analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability to communicate complex scientific findings to multidisciplinary stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Solid-state NMR experience.
  • Pharmaceutical or biotech industry experience.
  • Experience with formulation development or pharmaceutical material characterisation.
  • Knowledge of drug delivery systems and dosage form performance.
  • Experience working with advanced analytical instrumentation.
  • Background in spectroscopy, materials research or physical characterisation.

Important Requirements

Candidates must have existing Right to Work within the European Union. Sponsorship is not available.

This role is fully on-site in Belgium. Candidates must be able to work on-site 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. Hybrid or remote working is not available.
