Account Director, Medical Communications

Level: Comparable to Senior Account Manager (3-5 years' agency-side experience)
Practice Areas: Promotional Medical Education & Medical Affairs
Employment Type: Full-time | Remote

Role Summary

As an Account Director, you will own day-to-day client relationships and program delivery across a portfolio of biopharma brands. You'll translate strategy into executable scopes, orchestrate cross-functional internal teams, and ensure high-quality, compliant outputs across promotional medical education and medical affairs workstreams. Success looks like on-time/on-budget delivery, delighted clients, measurable outcomes, and healthy account growth.

What You'll Do (Core Responsibilities)

  • Client Leadership & Strategy

    • Serve as the primary point of contact for brand and medical clients; lead weekly status, quarterly business reviews, and executive-ready updates.
    • Distill scientific/brand strategy into clear briefs, scopes, timelines, and success metrics for cross-functional teams (medical, creative, editorial, project management, digital).
    • Identify needs, connect solutions, and drive organic growth, change orders, and multi-year program roadmaps.
  • Program & Financial Ownership

    • Build and manage SOWs, budgets, timelines, and resourcing plans; track margin, utilization, and forecast accuracy.
    • Maintain rigorous scope/change/risk controls; escalate and resolve delivery issues proactively.
    • Coordinate vendors (KOLs, writers, designers, platforms, production) and negotiate rates when needed.
  • Compliance & Review

    • Navigate MLR/PRC processes and platform workflows (e.g., Veeva PromoMats/Vault, Zinc, or equivalent).
    • Ensure adherence to agency SOPs and client governance; uphold accuracy, balance, and fair scientific representation across all materials.

Deliverables You'll Lead (Representative Work)

Promotional Medical Education (peer-to-peer & HCP promotion)

  • Speaker program ecosystems (core decks, iPDFs, speaker toolkits, sign-in/compliance assets)
  • MOA/MOD content, visual aids, leave-behinds, field training modules
  • Omnichannel HCP campaigns (email, web, social, banners) and performance dashboards
  • Congress promotional assets: booth screens, scientific theater materials, symposia slide decks, agendas, signage

Medical Affairs

  • Advisory boards: design, recruitment/ops, briefing books, discussion guides, insights synthesis
  • Congress medical deliverables: medical booth assets, data displays, congress daily recaps, insight mining
  • Scientific platforms/narratives, lexicons, claims/grids, evidence compendia
  • MSL resources: FAQs, objection handlers, scientific response documents

Qualifications (Must-Haves)

  • 3-5 years of account management experience in a medical communications or healthcare agency (promotion and/or medical affairs).
  • Demonstrated ownership of SOWs, budgets, timelines, and cross-functional orchestration.
  • Proven success managing MLR/PRC submissions and stakeholder alignment in regulated environments.
  • Comfort translating clinical/scientific content into clear deliverables and action plans (no writing required, but strong scientific fluency).
  • Excellent client presence, meeting facilitation, and executive communication skills.

Tools & Systems (Preferred)

  • Veeva PromoMats/Vault, Zinc or equivalent review platforms
  • Project tools (e.g., Smartsheet, MS Project, Monday.com, Asana), CRM (e.g., Salesforce)
  • Proficiency in PowerPoint/Excel; familiarity with basic analytics dashboards

Nice-to-Haves

  • Therapeutic exposure (e.g., oncology, immunology, CV/metabolic, rare disease, neurology).
  • Experience with speaker operations, virtual event platforms, or congress logistics.
  • Comfort with omnichannel strategy and measurement frameworks (reach, engagement, HCP behavior proxies).

Travel

  • Occasional travel for client meetings, speaker programs, and congresses (estimate 10-20%, seasonally higher around major meetings).
