A forward-thinking technology company is seeking a freelance Lead Mechatronics Engineer to drive the development of a precision device platform. This is a contract-based opportunity (6 to 12 months) for an experienced professional with strong electrical and software engineering expertise, ideally within regulated or high-precision environments.

Role Overview

As Lead Mechatronics Engineer, you will be responsible for the architecture, integration, and refinement of complex systems, with a particular focus on embedded software, electronics, and system-level design. You will lead a small engineering team and collaborate closely with data scientists and experimental researchers to ensure the platform meets performance, safety, and usability standards.

This role is ideal for a technically hands-on freelancer who thrives in fast-paced, multidisciplinary environments and can balance strategic oversight with detailed execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of embedded systems and electronic components for a precision device platform.
  • Oversee system integration across hardware and software domains, ensuring cohesive functionality and performance.
  • Drive the development of firmware and embedded software, including architecture, implementation, and testing.
  • Manage PCB design, component selection, and electrical safety considerations.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers to ensure seamless integration of electronics within the physical system.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory and quality standards (e.g., ISO, IEC, FDA).
  • Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including design files, test protocols, and risk assessments.
  • Coordinate project timelines and deliverables, including contributions to international collaborations.
  • Mentor junior engineers and interns, fostering technical growth and accountability.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's, Master's - Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in Medical Device development with a strong emphasis on embedded software and electronics.
  • Proficiency in embedded programming (e.g., C/C++), microcontroller platforms, and real-time systems.
  • Experience with PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, KiCad) and hardware debugging.
  • Familiarity with CAD tools and cross-functional collaboration with mechanical teams.
  • Strong understanding of electrical safety standards and medical device regulations
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead technical discussions across disciplines.
  • Availability for a freelance contract of 6-12 months, with flexibility to work independently and meet project deadlines without compromising on high work quality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with quality and regulatory frameworks (e.g., ISO 14971, IEC 60601, IEC 62304, FDA 510k, MDR).
  • Demonstrated success in leading multi-stakeholder technical projects.
